TAKING STUDY COURSE EXAMS – Faculty of Medicine and Life Sciences (FMLS)
Interim-examinations
To be eligible for the final course examination, a student must first complete all required coursework as specified in the course description, including interim-examinations. These may include tests, practical or laboratory assignments, presentations, reports, or other tasks. The exact number and types of assessments and their impact on the final grade are outlined in each course description.
If a student receives a failing grade in an interim-examination, they have the opportunity to retake it up to two additional times at the FMLS.
Important: Retaking an interim-examination at FMLS is a paid service, and the fee may vary depending on the study program. Current pricing details can be found in the “LU Fees for Study-Related Services in the 2024/2025 Academic Year”, particularly in section 4. Available here
If a student misses an interim-examination assessment for a justified reason, the retake is free of charge, and this attempt is not counted as one of the allowed retakes. For more information on how to justify an absence, please refer to the infographic: Available here
If there has been a significant procedural irregularity or error in the work evaluation process, the student has the right to submit a complaint. Details on the complaint procedure and retake rules are available in the document “Procedure for Retaking Midterm Assessments at the University of Latvia FMLS”. Available here
If you have additional questions, please feel free to contact the coordinator of your study program – they’re here to help!
Final Course Examinations
Students must take a final examination as specified in the course description at the end of each semester. To be eligible, students must:
Successfully pass all interim-examinations;
Fulfill financial obligations set by the Study Agreement.
Examinations are held according to a schedule approved by the faculty dean.
Please remember: You must bring your student ID or another form of identification to the exam and follow the instructions provided by the course lecturer. If a student disrupts the exam or uses unauthorized materials, the lecturer has the right to dismiss the student from the examination.
If a student receives a grade lower than 4 (on a 10-point scale), does not attend the exam, or is dismissed, they may retake it up to two more times (three total attempts). The third attempt is conducted in the presence of a commission, and retaking the exam is a paid service according to the LU pricing list.
Just like with interim-examinations, if a final exam is missed for a justified reason, the retake is free of charge, and the missed attempt is not counted. See the infographic for details: Available here
If there has been a significant procedural irregularity or error in the work evaluation process, the student has the right to submit a complaint. The procedures are outlined in the “Procedure for organization of examinations of study courses at the University of Latvia”. Available here
